The "Gadio" Group for basic ecology is an independent association of ecologists and naturalists. The name comes from the street in Milan (Viale Gadio) where it was founded in May 1971 (2001 is then the 30th anniversary!) by a group of researcbers from Universities, Research Institutes Museums and amateurs. All have been united by a vivid interest for ecological activities and ideas, which at that time were gaining more and more attention among the Italian cultural spheres.

SUMMARY - The "Gadio" Group for basic ecology is an independent association of ecologists and naturalists. The name comes from the street in Milan (Viale Gadio) where it was founded in May 1971 (2001 is then the 30th anniversary!) by a group of researchers from Universities and Natural History Museums and amateurs. These were united by a vivid interest for ecological activities and ideas, which were gaining more and more attention among the ltalian cultural spheres. The name of the Group emphasises the main activity of the founders in fundamental ecology, rather than in what was at that time called "ecology" in too many newspapers, debates and political conventions, for journalistic or advertising rather than for scientific purposes. Largely open to encourage young contributors, the "Gadio" Group welcomes anyone wanting assistance and advice in his ecological work.

RIASSUNTO - Dopo brevi notizie sull ' origine del nome: si ricorda la costituzione, trent'anni fa, nel maggio 1971, a Milano, In viale Gadio, dI un assocIazIone informale di universItari, rIcercatori dI Musei Civici e cultorI della materia, che comprendeva appassionati di un' ecologia scientifica. Il Gruppo si è presto orientato su orizzonti promozionali per i giovani, sottratti potenzialmente a pressioni accademiche nel convinto svolgimento dei programmi scientifici. Per una ricerca libera, interessante e personale il Gruppo Gadio ha inteso dedicarsi all'ecologia di base, sottratta al tempo della fondaziorie a opere confusamente "applicate" d'incerta bontà metodologica e di fini non sempre chiari. E tale rimane la sua intenzione per il futuro. Un rapido ricordo del grande naturalista Pellegrino Strobel, pioniere nel tardo XIX secolo di un 'ecologia analitica ed evolutiva, conclude la rapida rassegna dei nostri motivi scientifici.
