The centenary of a Nobel prize award for Medicine to an Italian scientist, Camillo Golgi (in 1906), marks one of the most important celebratory and academic events in Italian scientific culture. Several aspects make the Nobel prize awarded to this Lombard scholar extraordinary: Golgi was the first Italian Nobel prizewinner; the only Italian to this day to win it for a medical-biological discovery in Italy; and it was the first in a long series of recognitions for neuroscience. Golgi’s research inspired highly diverse research fields in medicine and biology.

Pavia was the centre of Golgi’s academic career and scientific activity throughout his life. It was here that he founded a scientific school whose protagonists have had a decisive influence to this day.
