N. 157

Summary — The a. gives a description of the presence of women in the institutions where, though being the majority of the population, they appear under-represented. The a. reports many data regarding the acquisition of the right to vote and of the eligibility by the women, the dates when the first representatives have been elected in the various Nations, the numerical and percentage of the feminine presence in the year 1975 (date in which began the ten-years period dedicated by the United Nations to the woman) and the present one in 144 Countries with a Parliament.

Additional data are reported referring to the women candidates in the last elections, and in the end the candidates and the elected to the European Parliament. The exigency to overcome the present situation that discriminates women, in terms of political representation, has been perceived also by the European Parliament that in its resolution n. 2.169/88 "Women in the decisional centres" invited the political parties to promote "positive actions" by adopting a System of Quotas to be reserved for the under-represented sex. For the time being, even taking into consideration the variety of contingent situations, the presence of women in the institutions is, in the majority of the cases, insufficient and does not reflect at the highest levels the variety, the complexity and the richness of the feminine world.
