Summary — The paper deals with the problems faced by Russian enterprises navigating the difficult waters of an economic system which left the command system and is presently heading towards a market economy, with the difficulties and uncertainties deriving from the absence of a market culture intrinsic to Russian society and from the still undecided final target of the transformation.
A major problem is indeed identified in the cultural heritage of the Russian past and especially of the Soviet legacy. The examples are taken from the Soviet organisational system and from the peculiarity of the Soviet currency.
The characteristics of Russian management and of Russian enterprises are discussed, together with the increasing signals of change originating from Government decisions and current business practice. The steps accomplished in the institutional framework, especially as far as property rights are concerned, are seen as essential intermediate ingredients of the process of change.
