N. 170

Summary — This article is an attempt to analyze the personality and some of the works of Arrigo Solmi. Solmi, born in Modena, has been one of the most important italian historians in the first fifty years of the twentieth century. His work was particularly remarkable in the University of Pavia, where he was one of the founding fathers of the Faculty of Political Sciences.

The author tries to focus on some moments of Solmi’s life: the beginning of his University career, his ideological evolution from national liberalism to fascism.

Particular attention is given to Solmi’s role in the birth of a scientific tradition of History of International Relations in Italy. The critical analysis of Solmi’s studies on diplomatic history and on international politics brings the author to underline the influence of Solmi on some historians (Rodolfo Mosca and Mario Toscano for instance) who where to have an important role in italian historiography.
