Summary — The Faculty of Political Science was founded on 7 January 1926 by means of a process that developed in three phases. (1) The origins, in 1890, with the formation of the Istituto nelle scienze giuridiche e sociali. (2) A period of preparation, from 1923 (the Riforma Gentile) to 1925, when Arrigo Solmi (the future Rector) and Pietro Vaccari (the future Dean), founded the Scuola di studi storici e politici with the aim of providing training for the careers in administration and diplomacy. (3) The birth of the Faculty, at a difficult moment, following Mussolini’s speech of 3 January 1925 which gave rise to the attempt to " fascistize " all public institutions. Although the fascists hoped to turn the faculty into a tool of the regime, it was worthy of note not only for its high level of teaching but also for its relative degree of liberty and the low level of political interference.
