Summary - In this lecture introducing a conference held in November 1999, the author examines the state of political philosophy in Italy, and its potential in addressing the new political questions arising in the face of globalization and renewed cultural conflicts. The various theoretical currents of Italian political philosophy can be roughly categorized as either normative or historical and hermeneutic. The various attitudes to the new political questions can be roughly categorized as those of either "optimistic simplifiers" or "cultural conflictualists".
