"Formaliter in voluntate, radicaliter in intellectu. Imperium e libertà in Gabriel Vázquez e Francisco Suárez"

Gabriel Vázquez and Francisco Suárez, two eminent Spanish personalities, representatives of the Second Scholasticism, are compared in this essay on the subject of law. To do this we focus our attention, in particular, on the imperium and on freedom, as they are directly connected to the way of understanding the act-law. The two Jesuits, indeed, take totally opposite directions, irremediably irreducible to a synthesis though ideally united in the starting point of their theoretical development in the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas: Suárez will place itself on the voluntaristic line, while Vázquez will pursue the intellectualistic one
