"Potere, istituzioni, ideologie: le dimensioni analitiche del sistema internazionale contemporaneo"
The article aims to assess the main features of today´s international system. Therefore, two specific purposes will be addressed. Firstly, the creation of a typology of international order through the adoption of a theoretical pluralism: this enables to consider all relevant aspects of the world, each of which is assumed to be necessary but not sufficient to explain reality just by itself. The first part of the paper will summarise the most important theories of IR: Neorealism, Neo-Liberal Institutionalism, Neo-Kantian Liberalism, and Constructivism. The second will define such a typology. It consist of three dimensions: power, institutions, and ideologies. As these variables are operationalised, the result that is going to appear is an international order based on a unipolar distribution of power, a high degree of institutionalisation, and an ideologically heterogeneous system. Secondly, this method will be used to compare all international orders emerged since the rise of modern nation-States. So, the third part of the article will point out four kinds of international orders: the two "westfalian" orders (1648-1789; 1815-1914); the "mass ideology" order (1919-1939); the "cold war" order (1945-1989); and the "post 1989" order.
