"Un orfano tra Oriente e Occidente. Il Giappone negli articoli di Paolo Beonio-Brocchieri"

Paolo Beonio-Brocchieri has been an Italian prominent scholar which studied Japan´s philosophy, history and politics. As a contributor to "Relazioni Internazionali", a magazine published by ISPI of Milan, he documented and discussed the evolution of the Japanese approach to the post-war international problems, as long as the gradual rising of Tokyo as a main power, in Asia and in the world. The article retraces the interpretation by Beonio-Brocchieri of the position of Japan in the international arena. The topics which were debated included the strong and yet controversial alliance with the United States, the re-establishment of neighbouring relations with the Soviet Union and China, the attraction and the jealousy regarding Europe. As a matter of fact, Japan was able to combine its geopolitical location in Asia with its sense of belonging to the community of the industrialized nations that pushed it rather towards Europe and America. Stretched between East and West, however, Japan overcame its inferiority complex after the catastrophe of World War II and acquired a high level standard. According to Beonio-Brocchieri, Japan, apparently without major contrasts among the different political forces, at the end of the Eighties was ready to reconsider the historical values in a new light in order to re-evaluate nationalism.
