In 1926 the newly founded Faculty of Political Science of the University of Pavia began publishing the yearly review, Annuario di Politica Estera, the mission of which was to promote political studies, with special emphasis being placed on raising the profile of foreign policy. While the Annuario was only published for a few years (1926-1930, with a special " Annuario " in 1935), the second journal of the Faculty, the Annali di Scienze Politiche was published from 1926 to 1941, when it was suspended owing to the war. In 1950, Bruno Leoni, the first Dean of the Faculty, decided to continue the tradition of the Faculty, resuming the publication of a new series of the Annali. The first issue of Il Politico thus appeared on 31 May 1950. Under Leoni’s guidance, and due to the eminence of its Italian and foreign contributors, Il Politico rapidly gained international acknowledgement, enabling it to survive its founder’s sudden and tragic death.
