"L´editore e il consigliere. Laterza, Croce e il regime in un carteggio recente (1928-1943)"

Starting from the last two volumes of Carteggio Benedetto Croce- Giovanni Laterza (1931-1943), the essay takes in exam some aspects of the cultural resistance, shared by the ancient philosopher, his editor and a little group of intellectuals (Adolfo Omodeo, Luigi Russo, Guido De Ruggiero, Francesco Flora) against the “nazionalization of the culture” promoted by fascist dictatorship. From the letters between Croce and Laterza in the years of largest consent around fascism and Mussolini, we can follow the growing difficulties which involved the philosopher/consultant and the publisher, especially after the racial laws (1938) and the beginning of the Second World War. In spite of the censorship, the perquisitions and the arrests of some contributors, the books published by Casa Laterza and the review “La Critica”, directed and largely written by Croce himself, allowed to create a small but active group of young intellectuals (Leone Ginzburg, Franco Venturi, Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti and many others), who will play an important role in the antifascist movement “Giustizia e Libertà” and, after the War, in the cultural establishment of Italian democracy.
