Abstract

Titolo:
"Le correnti politiche del Risorgimento"

This essay deals with the political ideologies of the Italian Risorgimento, dwelling upon the fundamental ideas of reactionary, conservative, moderate and progressive thought. Particularly the essay focuses on the democratic thought, in order to show that the difference between the supporters of national unity and those who instead favored a federalist model was in fact not so radical. Democratic federalism, from the three-year Jacobite period onwards, represented the proposal to unify the country in a differentiated and pluralist way, rather than in such a way as to favor particular or local interests (unlike the numerous anti-democratic federalist projects from the Restoration to the 1848 Revolution, including the so-called neoguelfi programs). From the same perspective, Mazzini’s proposal, which favored unity but not centralization, and Cattaneo’s federalist project, which rested on similar ideological premises, can be shown to be less distant and contrasting than contemporary historians have continually claimed.
