Abstract

Titolo:
"Il multiculturalismo religioso di Bhikhu Parekh: dal caso indiano all’Europa"

The aim of this essay is to examine Bhikhu Parekh’s model of religious pluralism in order to evaluate its potential suggestions for granting a wider political inclusion of religious groups in contemporary European democracies. Parekh moves from the idea that religion plays a relevant role within the public sphere and discusses the secularist view according to which religion should be considered as a ‘private matter’ to be kept separated from political and public space. His multicultural model tries to grant full recognition of religious pluralism as well as to propose the inclusion of religious diversity in the political order through adopting a system of legal pluralism already present for instance in India. The main conclusion of this essay is that such system could be further developed in order to try to apply it, at least partially, also in European multicultural societies as a possible strategy to avoid dangerous conflicts between religious groups.
