"L’ Opec in prospettiva storica: i ruoli dell’America Latina"

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has been affecting the global economy over the last fifty years; nevertheless, little attention has been given to this topic, especially for what concerns the contribution of Latin American states. In fact, most of those studies on the history of OPEC have focused on the role of Arab members, or on the Venezuelan commitment during the foundation years. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to analyse the particular role of Latin American countries within OPEC from its establishment in 1960 until today. In addition, this paper also examines the reasons why some Latin American states (i.e. Mexico and Columbia) failed to join this organization, and explains why Brazil decided not to become a full member of OPEC. This paper demonstrates that Venezuela played a prominent role in OPEC both in the Sixties and in the Seventies, and has been striving for the leadership in recent years. On the contrary, the study notes that Ecuador has always played a limited role within OPEC.
