"Appunti sulla politica estera del Brasile (1822-1930)"

Brazil is the largest and most densely populated country in Latin America. In recent years it has also become an emerging country within the context of the multipolar international system of the 21st century. It is a member of the G-20 forum and BRICS and is the main driving force behind the processes of Latin-American integration. This has been made possible as a result of different elements of both an economic and a political kind. A prominent role has been played by the foreign policy of this country-continent: a foreign policy characterised by an important historic dimension that is generally little-known. Starting from these premises and using original documentation, this essay reconstructs the main historical coordinates of Brazilian foreign policy from the year it gained independence from Portugal (1822) up to the political turning-point represented by the tenentista revolution in 1930, which ushered in the subsequent Vargas period. The study of the foreign policy of Brazil from 1822 to 1930 makes it possible to retrace the main steps in the history of the country during both the imperial period and the First Republic. It also allows us to recall the constant growth of its international role, in particular during the Baron of Rio Branco period in the early twentieth century and after the innovations engendered following the caesura of the First World War.
