"La questione di Cipro tra storia e politica"

This article explores the development of the Cyprus dispute from the perspective of this constant in Ankara’s strategic, a constant whose goal has always been the partition of Cyprus. To this partition contributed the constitution of independence of 1960 imposed by the Guarantee powers; this constitution separated precisely not the area but the two communities in Cyprus. Territorial partition was achieved on the part of Turkey only after the 1974 invasion. Contrary to the widespread view that the ill-fated attempt of the Greek military regime to carry out a coup against the Cypriot president Makarios had aimed at Cyprus’ unification with Greece (énosis) , the author cites evidence which supports the opposite view, that is, the strategic goal of the Greek junta was the partition of the island, and that it therefore coincided with that of Ankara. In addition, the author argues that the proposal of the UN General Secretary, Kofi Annan, was also of partitive nature, and that for this reason it was rejected by the Greek Cypriots at the well-known referendum. The article analyses the developments since then, as well as the efforts of the Cypriot leadership to isolate the partition reasoning, taking into account the geopolitical shifts that occurred in the region through the deterioration in relations between Israel and Turkey and the discovery of sizeable energy reserves in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone.
