"Putin e il pensiero eurasiatico"

The Eurasisme is a term recalling the complexity of both history and bi-continental characteristics of Russia. Russian historians and sociologists make this messianic idea go back to the Mongolian domination and the tradition of the Orthodox Church by which culture, institutions and political praxis are deeply permeated. The “Eurasian” conception took hold in XVIII century as a reaction to universalism and European feeling of Peter The Great but culturally consolidated during the twenties of XIX century within the circles of Russian exiled in France. The key concept of Eurasisme is the claim of being recognized as a distinct civilization with respect to Western world, in particular a mix of Asian culture and Christianity, founded more upon the spirituality rather than on materialist values. The contemporary champion of Eurasian thought, Aleksandr Dugin, considers Eurasia, led by Russia, as one of the geopolitical continental parts by which the world is divided and whose “mission” is to antagonize the United States, viewed as herald of negative values and ambitions (universalism, globalism, imperialism). After some attempts to approach to the West, Putin has adhered to Eurasisme in an ambiguous way. The Asian partners, in fact, do not enthusiastically share its political and economic initiatives in Central Asia (Eurasian Economic Union). Moreover, China represents a cumbersome ally/competitor which, in the future, could menace the Russian supremacy in the Eurasian political entity.
