"La competizione navale nel Mar Caspio"

Energy security is a crucial issue to understand the so-called “arms race” in the Caspian Sea. Naval developments from all the five countries in the Caspian Sea basin represent a warranty for the protection of energy infrastructures and thus to the regional balance of power. Regional and local players such as Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan try to engage on a multilateral stage with both Russia and the Western countries, in order to restrict Moscow’s influence on their internal politics and economies, Moving from a succinct analysis of the naval deployments in the Caspian Sea during the Soviet-era, the paper provides a description of the current military and diplomatic developments in the area. In particular, within the security dilemma theoretical framework, the article tries to assess the most recent naval policies of the Caspian States.
