"L’indicazione di origine dei prodotti nella normativa europea: quale impatto per l’Italia?"
The aim of the paper is
showing the importance of product labelling
(i.e. indication of origin and quality schemes)
in the Italian context.
The analysis takes into account the following
elements of the Italian system: model
of economic specialization, commercial
relations with foreign countries, industrial
districts, dynamics of counterfeiting, offshoring
and consumer interests.
In short, the indication of origin can be
useful for Italy since it is specialized in traditional
Productive sectors; this means that
supply chains are probabilistically simpler
and the origin labeling assumes a greater
value in informing the consumer. Moreover,
Italy has considerable connections with countries
which already introduced indication of
origin. Italian districts are based on “country
of origin effect” (and quality) and the magnitude
of the counterfeiting phenomenon is
relevant (traceability limits illegal or unfair
trade practices). Since the Country has a limited
propensity to export abroad productive
activity, the indication of origin would discourage
offshoring in countries which make
attractive products. Lastly, italian consumers
have a certain interest in product origin.
