Title:

Position for a graduated engineer or physicist at the Master Level – (Ingegnere oppure Fisico) for a 1-year research in the Electrooptics Group at University of Pavia, to work on:

“Simulation, design and characterization measurements on optical concentrators for photodetectors (APDs) arrays”

in the frame of an European FET project “Megaframe” (other partners are: STM Edimburgh, EFPL Lausanne, IRTS Trento)

Requisites:

-       citizen of an EU Member country (or of Associate or Candidate country)

-       graduated by no more than 3 years, with good marks

-       familiarity with photodetectors and optics;

-       be available full time at Department of Electronics, University of Pavia

Tasks:

-       develop and run software for simulation of optical systems in ray-optics approximation; 

-       study of new concentrator structures;

-       set up a characterization bench to test optical arrays

Duration: 12 months (eventually extendable for 12 more)

Start date 1-11-2006

Research grant € 18.074 (per year, gross salary)

Fringe allowance: special rate accomodation in the Campus.

SFI has recently launched a new award which might be of interest to early-career track researchers in your institution. This recently launched SFI Young Investigator programme is aimed at exceptional young scientists who have attained their Ph.D. Within the last five years. Funding will support them to start up their own independent research programme in an Irish research institution. They are developing a family of high-performance optical components and subsystems that slash the cost of network deployments while ensuring higher profit margins for optical system vendors. Their high power Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) combine proven wafer fabrication technology with an innovative, highly-integrated design that delivers the performance needed to support any metro or long-haul networking application at a fraction of the cost of existing products.  

Chief VCSEL Design Engineer
As a senior technical member of the Product Development Team, will lead the photonic design and device process development for novel laser module.  

Responsibilities:
Responsible for VCSEL device construction, driving performance to increasing levels of functionality (e.g. power, modulation rate), and improve existing design specifications, tooling specifications and manage key vendor relationships.

Competencies:
Post Doctoral experience with long wavelength semiconductor laser design and fabrication. Proven product development background with successful track record of introducing technology from concept to product development readiness. Expert level knowledge of CAD-based design and layout tools for photonic and optoelectrical devices. Successful relationships with photonics related external suppliers. Exceptional interactive skills to work effectively cross-departmentally, as well as with external audiences. Educational Preferences: PhD Electrical Engineer or Physics, Extensive publications and invited speaker credentials, Patent portfolio a strong plus.
