UFAW is a unique scientific and technical animal welfare organisation. Nel santuario sono presenti soprattutto Saguinus geoffroyi, che vengono studiati da docenti dell'Università della Florida, che gestisce il santuario. Il dott.Rasmussen, che dirige il centro, studia anche un gruppo di Macaca arctoides presente on Tanaxpillo Island, Lake Catemaco Mexico.

The International Primate Sanctuary of Panama welcomes proposals to conduct studies on the behavior of primates, their ecology, and the flora of Isla Tigre. We will also consider proposals for conducting research on the howlers, capuchins and Panamanian tamarins in Agua Clara, a field site near Barro Colorado Island on Gatun Lake. We offer rustic but sufficient field housing, field logistic assistance, transport, and background information to graduate and post-doctoral students who wish to conduct research at the I.P.S.P. Those who are interested are advised to check out a copy of "Isla Tigre: An Island for Tamarins" from the Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center, or purchase it directly from Dr. Rasmussen for $15. C'e' anche un eccezionale servizio di informazioni via e-mail per i diversi settori di ricerca; l'unico problema è che poi le informazioni ulteriori si dovranno richiedere alla propria università, magari meno efficiente e/o organizzata ...

14-12-97: Su Primate Talk è comparso un interessante intervento di Joseph M. Erwin, Ph.D.( Division of Neurobiology & Behavior and Dept. of Primate Ecology BIOQUAL, Inc. Rockville, MD 20850-3336) per illustrare il suo progetto di ricerca, essenzialmente non invasiva, sugli .... ultraquarantenni attualmente allevati negli istituti di ricerca americani (GAAP).

"The Great Ape Aging Project involves noninvasive behavioral observations of the oldest captive great apes in research centers, zoological gardens, and retirement sanctuaries in the U.S. All insitutional holders of great apes over 40 years of age (that we know of) have agreed to participate in this project. All will be photographed and videotaped, and when possible, cognitive assessments will be done (consistent with environmental enrichment).

Essentially nothing will be changed for any captive primates, except that the project will, in some cases, be able to contribute to the support of the oldest great apes--and in that sense may provide some incentives for longevity and long-term housing enhancements. There is probably no greater prospect of securing long-term support for chimpanzees than for them to be involved in noninvasive or very minimally invasive studies that can result in better preventive medicine and clinical care for chimpanzees and humans."

9-12-97: A team of scientists has counted nearly 300 mountain gorillas living in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, bringing the total to around 600 for this most endangered gorilla sub-species. The census, conducted in October and November by the Bronx Zoo-based Wildlife Conservation Society, International Gorilla Conservation Programme, the Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation and the Uganda Wildlife Authority resulted in a tally of 292 individual gorillas from 28 groups, along with seven lone silverbacks (adult males). 6-12-97: Su New Scientist del 6-12 c'è un articolo sull'infant abuse in monkeys. The results follow a study of three species of monkey by Dario Maestripieri of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He says abuse usually takes the form of "infant dragging", where the mothers drag their infants along by the tail or leg while walking or running. Abusive mothers sometimes push, throw or even step on their infants. "This behaviour is never shown by good mothers" says Maestripieri.
4-12-97: JAKARTA (AP) - The government has reinstated one-third of 144 timber permits that were revoked in October following forest fires, an official says. The forest fires spread thick haze over much of Southeast Asia. Forty-five permits were returned to companies after they proved they had adequate funds and equipment to clear land without burning it, said Suprayitno, a spokesman for the Forestry Ministry. The permits allow companies to use timber from land that has been converted into plantations, timber estates or settlement areas.

18-11-97: Duke Primate Center Lemurs Are Released Into Wilds Of Madagascar. DURHAM, N.C. -- The leader of an unprecedented effort to return endangered lemurs to their homeland of Madagascar has emerged from the depths of the forest preserve to report that the five captive-born animals from Duke's Primate Center now roam free for the first time in their lives. Project leader Charles Welch reported that the black-and-white ruffed lemurs were released on Monday and immediately dispersed to begin their new lives in the 5,000-acre Betampona Natural Reserve, where they will enhance the dwindling lemur population. The lemurs are part of a project by the international Madagascar Fauna Group (MFG) to systematically repatriate as many as 20 of the adaptable animals to their ancestral island nation over the next three years. 15-11-97: Another tragedy happened in Kahuzi-Biega, Democratic Republic of Congo: The silverback Nindja died on October 30. He was shot with several bullets on the road near the station Tshivanga. Obviously he came across a patrouille of Rwandan soldiers, and these panicked and shot him. Afterwards, they removed the head and the hands from his corpse. Nindja is the third silverback leader of the gorilla groups habituated for tourists in the Kahuzi-Biega National Park who died within the last 4 years. The only one who has survived of the 4 famous silverback group leaders is Mubalala (from Angela Meder on Primate-Talk)
15-11-97: Tanzania DAR ES SALAAM, Nov 14 (AFP) - Monkeys in Tanzania's southern highlands face extinction because locals are eating them, the state news agency Shihata reported Friday. Quoting Mbinga game officer Patrick Ndimbo, the agency said that almost 60 percent of the area's 200,000 residents had now resorted to eating monkey meat, and that the monkey population was dwindling very fast. "It is now common in Mbinga district to have monkey meat on the menu of most restaurants," the agency quoted Ndimbo as saying. He said the meat is considered such a delicacy that a small monkey can be traded for a goat. It was the first time Shihata reported that people in Tanzania were eating monkeys. (From Primate-Talk)
12-11-97: INDONESIA: 60 BABY ORANGUTANS CONFISCATED FROM PEOPLE. At least 60 baby orangutans from January-November this year had been confiscated by the Natural Resources Conservation Office here from a number of people. Willie Smits of the forestry ministry said here Thursday that the 60 baby orangutans are now in Wanariset Samboja rehabilitation center for a 3.5-year taming period. The baby orangutans were confiscated from people who intended to sell the animals. Smits said that to get the baby orangutans from their mothers, the latter have to be harmed to make them release their babies.....
