Biography


Michele Rostan is full professor of Economic sociology and Director of the Centre for Study and Research on Higher Education Systems at the University of Pavia. After graduating in Economics and earning a PhD in Sociology, he has served as post-doctoral fellow, research-fellow, and assistant professor at the Department of Social and Political Studies of Pavia University. He is member of the Doctoral programme in Sociology of the University of Milan, member of interuniversity centre UNIRES - Italian Centre for Research on Universities and Higher Education Systems, member of the Consortium of Higher Education Researchers (CHER), of the Editorial Advisory Board of the journals Higher Education, and Studies in Higher Education, and of the Italian Sociological Association. He has taught at the University of Pavia, at the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia, at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and at the Waldensian Theological Seminar in Rome.


Research interests


Main research interests concern the study of the relationship between the economy, society and higher education focusing on the study of social actors, relations and institutions involved in the organisation and functioning of higher education systems, of the graduate labour market, and of university / industry links.
In the last few years, he participated in an International project on the academic profession ("Changing Academic Profession"), two European research projects on the relationship between higher education and the world of work ("Higher Education and Graduate Employment in Europe"; "The Flexible Professional in the Knowledge Society. New Demands on Higher Education in Europe"), and in two National research project on Higher education systems and Industrial districts ("Reorganization of higher education systems in the European "knowledge-based economies"; "Social Capital and Economic Performance at the Local level. A Comparative Study").
