Specific course objectives
The course aims at giving basic knowledge of the main types of machines and electrical drives (AC and DC current), including construction aspects and principles of operation. By completing the course the student will be able to identify and study the behavior of the most common types of machines with respect to their characteristics and electromechanical applications: motors and drives; the main features of synchronous machines operating as generators are also described.
Course programme
Definition and basic features of electrical machines and drives
The electrical machine as generator and motor. Electrical machines rated variables and standard. Types of service. Thermal behavior and cooling systems.

Testing and exams
Two written tests will conclude respectively the first and second part of the course. The final grade is based on the intermediate results and on a short oral discussion. For students who for serious reasons are unable to perform the tests a complete written and oral examination is provided at the end of the course.
