Azionamenti elettrici

2010-11 Academic year

Lecturer: Francesco Benzi

Course name: Azionamenti elettrici
Course code: 062157
Degree course: Ingegneria Informatica, Ingegneria per l'Ambiente e il Territorio
Disciplinary field of science: ING-IND/32
L'insegnamento è caratterizzante per: Ingegneria Elettrica
University credits: CFU 5
Course website: n.d.

Specific course objectives

The course aims at giving basic knowledge of the main types of machines and electrical drives (AC and DC current), including construction aspects and principles of operation. By completing the course the student will be able to identify and study the behavior of the most common types of machines with respect to their characteristics and electromechanical applications: motors and drives; the main features of synchronous machines operating as generators are also described.

Course programme

Definition and basic features of electrical machines and drives
The electrical machine as generator and motor. Electrical machines rated variables and standard. Types of service. Thermal behavior and cooling systems.

Induction machine and drives.
Construction aspects, importance and applications. Operation principles. General model and equivalent circuit. Definition of the slip and operating conditions as a motor. Mechanical and electromechanical characteristics at constant voltage and frequency. Basics of constant flux operation. Basics of speed regulation. Single-phase induction motor.

Synchronous machines and systems
Construction aspects, importance and applications as alternator and motor. Operation principles. General model, equivalent circuit, vector diagrams. Active and reactive power control. Stable operation at varying load. Torque and power characteristics. Mechanical characteristics of synchronous motors.

DC machines and drives.
Construction aspects and applications. Operation principles. General model, equivalent circuit. Electromechanical and mechanical characteristics and equations of separately excited machines. Armature reaction and compensation. Speed adjustment at torque and constant power operation.

Course entry requirements

Basics of electrical circuits theory and electromechanical conversion.

Testing and exams

Two written tests will conclude respectively the first and second part of the course. The final grade is based on the intermediate results and on a short oral discussion. For students who for serious reasons are unable to perform the tests a complete written and oral examination is provided at the end of the course.
