Specific course objectives

The aim of this course is to introduce the techniques of digital coding and transmission of information. After completing this course the student will have acquired a basic understanding of the issues and techniques related to information theory and digital transmission.

Course programme

Principles of information theory
Discrete stationary sources. Information, mutual information and conditional. Entropy and source coding. Channel capacity of discrete memoryless and additive Gaussian channel.

Digital signals in presence of AWGN noise
Model of the signal. Power spectral density. Geometric representation of signals in space. Probability of error for PSK signals, QPSK, M-QAM, FSK, CPM. Increase is less than the probability of error. Differential coherent detection.

Channel coding
Linear block codes. Generating and parity matrix. Hamming distance. Calculation of the syndrome and the standard array. Convolutional codes. Product description using state diagram. Definition and calculation of free distance. Decoding through the Viterbi algorithm.

Selective channels
Multipath propagation. Probability of error channels with flat fading. Diversity reception. Channel selective static and time-varying. Linear equalizers and maximum likelihood sequence estimation. Work to spread spectrum modulation schemes.

Synchronization techniques
Synchronization of frequency, phase and timing. Work on the channel estimation in time domain and frequency.
