Specific course objectives

The student will gain knowledge of the main waste treatment and disposal techniques with energy recovery.

Course programme

LEGISLATION
Waste production and energy recovery in Europe and Italy. Regulation of energy recovery.

LANDFILL
Biogas captation plants: technologies and management. Calculation of biogas production.

INCINERATION
Pyrolysis and thermal gasification. Generation of energy from biomass. Economical assessment of a cogeneration system.

MASS AND ENERGY RECOVERY FROM MUNICIPIAL SLUDGE
Sludge production. Calculation of biogas production from anaerobic digestion. Characterization of biogas . Heat drying of municipal waste: description and design. Environmental recovery and sustainable development.

Course entry requirements

Water and wastewater treatment plants. Wastes and remediation of contaminated soils.
