City and town planning
In the first part of the course the historical, political, economical and social factors that led urbanization will be highlighted and the tools will be analysed (plans, projects, norms, rules) that urban operators used to orientate territorial transformation processes and urban developments. A short reconstruction of city and city planning discipline development will be performed, where a thematic and critical reading of main plans of nineteenth and twentieth centuries is proposed: particularly, about the first big eighteenth century’s plans, the following aspects will be highlighted: for Paris the “structural” and “executive” ones, for Barcelona the “equalizing” and urban engineering aspects, for Vienna the nexus between plan and project. Then urban utopias are studied and the relationship between functionalism and town’s shape in Modern Movement.
Recent urban transformations in Italy
In the second part of the course, referring particularly to the tendencies of recent urban transformations in Italy and to the new relation forms between operators and territory governing authorities, the lessons will give students the cognitive, interpretative and executive coordinates necessary to face planning problems at the different scales (regional, provincial, municipal) with special attention to problems of mobility, environment and landscape, planning, public and collective space. The reality of Pavia will be deepened in its relation between urban tools’ evolution and city’s development, starting from the first acts at the end of the nineteenth century till the last tools, particularly referring to real Plans’ enforcement.
