Specific course objectives
The scope is to give to the instruments for decomposing the machines into elementary components and into their connections. To give a clear vision of the actions present in the mechanical systems and of the movements determined by these. Giving the basic elements for modeling and analyzing the 1 d.o.f. machine.
Course programme
Description of a machine and of a mechanical system.
Structure and functional scheme of a machine. Physical and mathematical model. Study of the movement.
Kinematics of machines and mechanisms
Reference to the movement of the point and the rigid body. Coriolis and Rivals theorems. Kinematic close chains: kinematic couples, linkages, crank mechanisms, multiple-bar linkages.
Dynamics of machines and mechanisms
Dynamic actions in the machines. Actions of contact. Friction grip, rolling friction. Actions exchanged between solids and fluids. Dynamic balances.
Machine dynamics
Scheme of a car. Power balance in the group: engine-transmission-user. Performance of a machine. Direct and retrograde motion. Machine dynamics in steady and unsteady flow. The periodic regime machine. Dynamics of the alternative machine. Balance of inertia forces. Application examples.
Course entry requirements
Basic knowledge of elementary mathematical tools. Basic knowledge of mathematics, geometry and physics.

Testing and exams
Two written tests will be conducted, which will focus respectively on the first and second part of the course. For those who have passed both tests, the final exam consist of an interview. Those who have not sustained both ongoing trials will sit a written exam, which will focus on topics discussed during the course in order to be admitted to the final interview.
