Specific course objectives

Advanced design problems of RC members (beams and columns)

Course programme

Ultimate limit states

  • flexure of beams
  • bending about two axes
  • combined axial load and bending on columns
  • biaxial bending on columns
  • behaviour of RC members undergoing torsion
  • behaviour of RC members undergoing torsion, shear and bending moment

Serviceability limit states

  • excessive deflections
  • excessive crack width
  • excessive concrete and steel normal stresses

Slender columns

  • theory
  • behaviour of RC slender columns
  • Eurocode 2 rules for RC slender columns (isolated members and columns in frames)

Detailing of reinforcement according to Eurocode 2

B-regions and D-regions
mention of strut and tie method applied to corbels

Design example
Students are required to design reinforcement for a simple frame, according to detailing rules in Eurocode 2. A written report with drawings must be checked by the teacher before the oral test.

Course entry requirements

Structural mechanics courses ("Scienza delle Costruzioni A" and "Scienza delle Costruzioni B") and RC mechanics and design basic courses ("Tecnica delle Costruzioni A" and "Tecnica delle Costruzioni B")

Testing and exams

Check of the design assignment comes before the oral test. The oral test consists of three questions.
