Specific course objectives
The main scope is to treat the basic concepts of mechanics and kinematics of points, introducing fundamental quantities like forces, work and energy. Such concepts will be then developed to introduce the dynamics of system of points and of extended bodies, fluid static and dynamics and thermodynamics.
Course programme
Mechanics points
- Scalar and vectorial kinematics, velocity and acceleration.
- Linear momentum. Impulse and momentum. Conservation of linear momentum. Forces: weight, elastic force, friction.
- Work and kinetic energy, conservtive forces and potential, conservation of mechanical energy.
- Angular momentum
- Harmonic oscillators and pendulums.
- Systems of points, internal and external forces, center of mass.
- Two-body collisions.
Mechanics of extended bodies
- Center of mass
- Energy and angular momentum of extended bodies. Koenig theorems. Work of internal and external forces.
- Rotational inertial. Huygens-Steiner theorem.
- Statics of bodies.
Fluid mechanics
- Pressure and density, surface and volume forces.
- Archimedes' principle and Stevino's principle.
- Fluid dynamics, Bernoulli theorem.
Thermodynamics
- Thermodynamic systems and thermodimical variables.
- Temperature, equilibrium and heat.
- First principle of thermodynamics, ideal gases.
- Cyclic transformations and heat engines.
- Second principle of thermodynamics adn entropy.
Course entry requirements
An excellent knowledge of the underlying mathematical concepts is considered as necessary. Trigonometry, Euclidean geometry, differential calculus and linear algebra are of particular importance.

Testing and exams
The exams consists in a written test followed by an oral examination. The written test is undetaken without the aid of any personal notes or textbook. Only when achieving more than 18/30 in the written test the candidate can undertake the oral examination, which will be held sometimes during the two weeks following the written test.
