Fundamentals Of Mechanics Of Materials and Structures

2010-11 Academic year

Lecturer: Claudio Carino

Course name: Fundamentals Of Mechanics Of Materials and Structures
Course code: 502471
Degree course: Ingegneria Civile e Ambientale
Disciplinary field of science: ICAR/08
The course relates to:
University credits: CFU 6
Course website: http://claudiocarino.angelfire.com/sdc.html

Specific course objectives

The main purpose of the course is to provide students with general criteria for studying structural systems as well as with fundamentals of continuum mechanics, aiming at the structural analysis of a particular system. Further, basic concepts for design of simple structures are illustrated and essentials of computational structural analysis are introduced.

Course programme

1. Rigid body systems
Constraints. Kinematic analysis. Static Analysis. Structural determinacy. Unstable structures. Analytic and synthetic solution methods for static equilibrium. Evaluation of reaction forces and moments. Modeling of structural systems.

2. Internal force analysis
Trusses. Beams. Axial force, shear and bending moment diagrams.

3. Continuum mechanics
Stress and strain. Elastic moduli. Mass properties. De St. Venant’s problem. Tension and compression. Bending. Shear. Torsion. Combined stresses.

4. Statically indeterminate structures
Strain in trusses and beams. Methods for the evaluation of element forces and displacements. Continuous beams. Application of Mohr’s analogy for the assessment of indeterminate structures.

5. Basic concepts for design
Structural elements subject to combined loads. Column design and elastic buckling.

6. Complex indeterminate structures
Introduction to displacement method and to computational structural analysis.
