Specific course objectives

The course has the aim to provide a description of the fundamental requirements of multimedia transmission over the Internet: protocols, architectures and quality of service guarantees.

Course programme

Multimedia requirements: jitter, delay, loss

Review of coding standards and sensitivity to network parameters

QoS, QoE, service classes

Review of networks: CDN, ATM, IP, Wireless

Quality management techniques and priorities in packet networks

Queueing theory primer, FQ, WFQ, … . Performances

Architectures for quality management over the Internet: IntServ, DiffServ. MPLS

Protocols: RTP/RTCP, RTSP

Signaling protocols SIP, H.323

IMS

P2P-based systems

examples (skype, voip, iptv)
