2010-11 Academic year

Lecturer: Alessandra Tomaselli

Course name: Laser safety
Course code: 999999
Degree course: Ingegneria Elettronica
Disciplinary field of science: FIS/03
University credits: CFU 6
Course website: n.d.

Specific course objectives

The course is designed to teach the knowledge required to perform laser safety. The program, divided in lectures and practical class, meets TSL and ASL training requirements outlined by CEI laser safety standards.

Course programme

Laser safety course id divided in three parts: knowledge base, expertise of TSL and of ASL, case studies

knowledge base

  • Laser fundamentals and terminology needed for laser safety
  • Laser bio-effects
  • Maximum permissible exposure (MPE) and accessible emission limit (AEL)
  • Laser classification
  • Associated and collateral laser radiation hazards
  • Protective eyewear
  • National and international laser safety standards
  • Exposure levels: hazard evaluation
  • Proper choice of eyewear

expertise of TSL and ASL

  • Medical application (ASL)
  • Laser application (TSL)
  • Laser radiation measurements
  • Laser control measures
  • National and international laser safety standard and guide

case studies

  • Maximum permissible exposure
  • Accessible emission level
  • CW and pulsed laser classification
  • Nominal ocular hazard distance
  • Protective eyewear choice

Course entry requirements

Understanding of basic principles of electromagnetic theory, geometric and wave optics

Course structure and teaching

Lectures (hours/year in lecture theatre): 38
Practical class (hours/year in lecture theatre): 14
Practicals / Workshops (hours/year in lecture theatre): 0

Suggested reading materials

CEI and UNI laser safety standards. Lectures notes will be distributed in classroom
