Specific course objectives

The most important formatives objectives of this course are the study of general concepts about measurement and uncertainty, the knowledge of basic instruments, analog and digitals, and the knowledge of measurement methods. This course will deal with the study of modern automatic measurement systems with Virtual Instruments and the acquisition of mechanical and industrial parameters.

Course programme

Introduction to measurements
Meaning and nature of measurements, signals and interfering parameters. Measurement errors. Traceability and role of metrology. The International System of Units. Measurement uncertainty and its propagation.

Analog instruments and electric measurements
Voltmeters, amperometers and multimeters. Measurements of fundamental electric parameters: voltage and DC current. AC Measurements . Power measurement . Analog oscilloscope: Cathodic-ray tube, Y Channel, Time Base, Trigger. Probe input. Typical measurements of signals

Electronic instruments and frequency and time measurements
Electronic Voltmeters and Multimeters. Universal Counter: functional blocks, frequency and time measurement. Sampling and quantization of signal. A/D conversion modules, elaboration and display modules, communication modules. Sampling methods with the digital oscilloscope.

Automatic measurements systems
Introduction to automatic measurement systems. Features of the data acquisition systems, input signals conditioning. Virtual Instruments: introduction to the LabVIEW programming, data acquisition, data elaboration and graphic display.

Mechanical measurements
Length and displacement measurements, speed and acceleration measurements, mass and strength measurements.

Industrial measurements
Thermal, pressure, flow, level measurements.

Laboratory
Simulation of measurement methods in Multisim enviroment. Programming in LabVIEW enviroment of Virtual Instruments for the acquisition of signals, the elaboration and the graphical display of data.

Course entry requirements

Basic knowledge of mathematics, statistics, physics ,electrotechnics, computer programming .

Testing and exams

At the end of the course there will be a written examination on every topic, both theory and laboratory. Only the students with a positive written evaluation will have access to an oral assessment that will complete the evaluation.
