Specific course objectives

Course provides basic knowledge on computer networks, and in particular on Internet. Objective is to provide student with familiarity about modern data transmission technologies, and with ability in analysing their performance.

Course programme

Introduction to computer networks
Elements of a network. Circuit switching and packet switching. Access to the network and transmission media. Performance: delay and losses in computer networks

Network architectures and communication protocols
Layered communication architectures, protocol definition, Internet architecture

Transport layer
Services. UDP e TCP protocols. Flow control and congestion control. Performance issues: latency, throughput and utilization

Network layer
Services. Routing algorithms. Internet protocol and routing

Datagram layer
Services. Multiple access protocols. Ethernet. Networks interconnection

Wireless networks
802.11 architecture. Wireless LAN, access protocols. Mobility
