Specific course objectives

The course aims to provide the mathematical foundations and methodological tools needed to analyze the main properties of continuous time dynamical systems and the design of simple linear control systems.

Course programme

Dynamical systems:
Mathematical models of physical systems. Definition of dynamic system using the input/state/output variables and its representations. Continuous time systems. Laplace transform. Nonlinear systems and their linearization. Matrices and transfer functions: relations with the impulse response and time domain representations. Connections of systems in series, parallel and feedback. Reduction of complexity of block diagrams. Definition of the frequency response function and its representations: Bode plots, polar plots, Nyquist diagrams.

Structural properties of dynamic systems:
Definition of state evolution and equilibrium. Stability. Stability criteria for linear time-invariant systems.

Design of control systems:
Design specifications. Analysis of feedback control systems using analytical and graphical methods: Nyquist and Bode. Variables that affect response: damping coefficient, bandwidth, gain and phase margin. Static behavior. Effect of disturbances. Design of controllers for SISO systems in the frequency domain.

Course entry requirements

Basic knowledge of elementary mathematics: complex numbers, trigonometry, linear algebra, differential equations.
