Specific course objectives

At the end of the course, the student will have the ability to understand existing systems and to understand the opportunities of telecom technologies.

Course programme

The first part of the course is shared with “Reti di Telecomunicazioni”. In the following, only the second half of the course relating to “systems” will be detailed.

  • CAC/UPC

SDH

  • Structure and network nodes
  • Self-recovery

Local and metropolitan networks
Following the IEEE 802 structure, standards for local (wired and wireless), metropolitan, personal and sensor networks are described. Description covers transmission techniques, medium access protocols and performance comparisons.

The principles of the main authentication and ciphering algorithms are described without mathematical details. The use of network devices is also analyzed.

  • Public and private key algorithms
  • Examples of attacks and coutermeasures

Geographical radio communications systems

  • Mobile radio systems 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G
  • Basics of satellite systems
