Specific course objectives
Plants module: during this module, the student will learn the principles of the main water and waste treatment processes and technologies. Basic design criteria will be also described.
Course programme
This course is composed by two modules: Fundamentals and Plants
Fundamentals module
Plants module
- I. Wastewater treatment. Principles of treatment processes. Kinetics of biochemical processes. Suspended growth biological processes (activated sludge). Physical and mechanical pre-treatments. Typical treatment trains for municipal wastewater. Design criteria.
- II. Water supply treatment. Ground water and surface water treatment plants (processes and technologies for the removal of different contaminants, plant schemes, design criteria).
- III. Waste treatment. Conventional and separate collection of municipal solid waste. Municipal solid waste selection plants. RDF production, composting, anaerobic digestion: principles. Waste incineration: types of plant, application fields, conventional emission treatment technologies. Sanitary landfill: main design criteria, leachate and biogas.
