Degree course: Ingegneria per l'Ambiente e il Territorio, Ingegneria per l'Ambiente e il Territorio
Disciplinary field of science: ING-IND/27
University credits: CFU 6
Course website: n.d.
Specific course objectives
The student will gain the basis of the main technologies for chemical and chemical-physical analysis in Environmental Engineering field (drinking waters, wastewaters, wastes, soils, sludges). The student will obtain theoretical knowledge regarding the sampling methods and storage of samples, the laboratory equipment and the analytical techniques. Moreover, the student will carry out some practical chemical analysis with laboratory equipment.
Course programme
Setting up an experimental research
Criteria for experimental research on sanitation and environmental engineering (drinking water and wastewater treatment, solid wastes recovery/disposal). Description of laboratory equipments and pilot plants; criteria for carrying out the research on a real treatment plant.
Analytical laboratory tecniques
Description of the basis on most common technologies for chemical and physical analysis.
Sampling
Sampling technologies and problems (water, wastes and soil) and storage methods.
Flow measurement
Measuring technologies and calculation of pollutants loads.
Laboratory analysis: water
Instrumental analysis (pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, fluorides), kit for analysis (COD, nitrogen, phosphorus, surfactants, metals), BOD, titrations (acidity, alkalinity), solid content, test strips (hydrogen peroxide and pH), respirometric tests , Jar test, microbiological analysis. Description of the laboratory practice.
Laboratory analysis: wastes and soil
Leaching tests; phosphorus, nitrogen, carbon and moisture determination. Description of the laboratory practice.
Wastewater treatment plants performacne assessment
Sludge clarification tests, aeration system testing, hydrodynamic tests (preparation and analysis). Description of the the main steps in the laboratory.
