Specific course objectives

The course goal is to introduce to the electronic measurement techniques through an experimental approach. The most important formative objectives are the knowledge of some general concepts: measurement and measurement uncertainty, as well as the knowledge of analog and digital instrumentation. The main measurement methods for electrical and electronic quantities as well as for low frequency and microwave electromagnetic fields will be then considered.

Course programme

The course is divided into two separate parts: Microwave measurements basics (3 CFU, Prof. L. Perregrini) and Electrical measurements A (6 CFU, Prof. P. Malcovati). The first part will cover the standards and the measurement techniques for the electromagnetic compatibility in electrical circuits and for the low and high frequency electromagnetic fields safety. The second part devoted to the definition of the concepts of measurement and measurement uncertainty, as well as to electrical measurements.

First part: Microwave measurements basics (3 CFU)
Measurement of low frequency and microwave electromagnetic fields

  • Survey of basic electromagnetics. Radiated electromagnetic fields.
  • Radiated and conducted disturbances: definition, standards, measurement techniques and instruments, mitigation.
  • low frequency and microwave electromagnetic fields: hazard, standards, measurement techniques and instruments, mitigation.
  • Cellular phone measurements: dosimetry.
  • Scattering parameters of a microwave circuit. Vector network analyzer: technical features, calibration. Experimental characterization of microwave circuits.

Second part: Electrical measurements A (6 CFU)
Basic metrology and electrical measurements

  • General concepts
  • Measurement systems
  • Measurement units
  • Standards
  • Measurement uncertainty
  • Analog instruments
  • Digital instruments
  • Measurement methods for dc electrical quantities and use of the instrumentation
  • Measurement methods for ac monophase electrical quantities and use of the instrumentation

Course entry requirements

Basic knowledge of mathematics, statistics, physics, electrotechnics and electronics.

Suggested reading materials

For the first part (Microwave measurement basics) the teacher will provide lecture notes. For the second part (Electrical measurements) the lecture notes (P. Malcovati, Misure Elettriche) and the slides used during the lectures are available. Moreover, it is possible to refer to the following books:

Testing and exams

For the first module (Microwave measurement basics) the exam will be oral. For the second module (Electrical measurements) there will be a written test at the end of the lectures. Moreover, the students will prepare reports on the activities carried-out during the experimental laboratory exercises. For the students that will have performed the written test and attended the laboratory exercises, the oral exam will consists in a discussion on the written test and the prepared reports. For the students that will not have performed the written test and/or attended the laboratory exercises, the exam will consist of an oral test on the whole program of the course. The mark will be assigned as a weighted combination of the marks of the two modules.
