Photogrammetry For Architectural Survey

2012-13 Academic year

Lecturer: Riccardo Galetto

Course name: Photogrammetry For Architectural Survey
Course code: 504252
Degree course: Ingegneria Edile-Architettura
Disciplinary field of science: ICAR/06
University credits: ECTS 9
Course website: n.d.

Specific course objectives

The course purpose is to provide the capability to survey buildings with on-site topographical, analytical and geometric rectification and photogrammetrical methods. These methods allow the students to get a "metric description" of the surveyed buildings. The topography section contains both theoretical and practical lectures about the most recent technologies and equipment (Total Station). Software concerning rectification, photogrammetry and 3D modelling will be available for the students during the practical lectures. By means of knowledge of these software the students will have the possibility to draw up their projects concerning other courses, like restoration and composition.

Course programme

1.DIRECT MEASUREMENTS PROCESSING

  • Measurements and real environment
  • Conceptual scheme of a measurement, defined as direct measurement
  • Dispersion of measurements due to the operative method
  • Sensitivity of a measuring instrument
  • Precision of a measuring instrument
  • Dispersion of measurements due to the working environment: understanding of the phenomenon and its consequences

2. MEASURING WITH TOPOGRAPHICAL METHOD

  • Simplification of geodetic problem
  • The topographical instrument ‘Total Station’
  • Survey through the TCR1205 instrument: from the measured polar coordinates to the calculated Cartesian ones

3.DIGITAL CAMERAS

  • Digital images characteristics
  • The structure of matrix sensor
  • How the sensor array works
  • Transformation of the image in digital form

4. DIGITAL IMAGES VISUALIZATION

  • The capture scheme: from negative to positive
  • Digital color imagery
  • From ‘image point’ concept to ‘image pixel’ concept
  • Visualization of an image on the PC screen
  • Swap between image and screen and between screen and image

5. THE GEOMETRIC VIRTUAL IMAGE

  • The concept of ‘geometric virtual image’
  • From coordinates system (r,c) to system (x,y)
  • Image point collimation
  • The ‘geometrical’ schema of the taking camera.
  • Terms of camera rectification

6. THE RECTIFICATION METHOD

  • General terms
  • The analytical rectification method
  • The geometric rectification method

7.CLOSE-RANGE PHOTOGRAMMETRY

  • Acquisition scheme
  • The mathematical expression of the collinearity constraint.
  • Determination of the absolute orientation parameters
  • Determination of the coordinates of the unknown points.
  • The photogrammetric method based on ‘relative + absolute’ orientation.

8.CLOSE-RANGE SURVEY PLANNING

  • The function of the GSD during survey planning
  • Different situations that may happen during the planning

Course entry requirements

Course structure and teaching

Lectures (hours/year in lecture theatre): 80
Practical class (hours/year in lecture theatre): 40
Practicals / Workshops (hours/year in lecture theatre): 0

Suggested reading materials

At the beginning of the course a CD will be free distributed to each student, with the lecture notes and the material necessary to attend the practical lessons in CAD room

Testing and exams

At the end of each practical lecture, on the field using the total station instrument and in the CAD room using the several software concerning rectification methods, Photogrammetry and 3D modelling, for each student an evaluation of the result of the attendance will be given. This evaluation with the result of a written test at the end of the course will give the final vote.
