Specific course objectives

Course programme

The course introduces the main video compression tecniques and standards.as well as some advanced material on scalable and multiple descriptions coding.It then introduces the main problems related to transmission over packet networks, tools and protocols to improve quality of service

Characterization of voice and audio signals
Sampling and coding according to PCM, ADPCM, Delta. Vocoing schemes: analysis and synthesis and codebook based (LPC, LTP, CELP). MP3

Video signals
Analogue video and fundamental parameters: PAL and NTSC systems. Digital video, 2D sampling, predictive technoques (block matching, optical flow). Transfor based coding. Perceptual weights. Fundamental rate-distortion theory. The MPEG-* ed H26* families of standards

Transmission over packet networks
ATM with specific reference to AAL. Transmission over IP networks: UDP, RTP,.Quality of Service in IP networks: Intserv and DiffServ. MPLS. Content distribution networks (CDN) and peer to peer netwoeks.

Course entry requirements

Basic knowledge from Signal Theory, Electrical Communicaztions, Telecommunications Systems, Digital Signal Processing.
