Specific course objectives

Completing the concepts learned in the lower level degree, with particular reference to the control systems of production, transmission and distribution of electricity, the supervisory control of production and utilization plants, the frequency and voltage control of the electrical system

Course programme

1. SCADA Systems
Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) for the electrical system. General considerations on control centers, hardware configuration, redundancy. SCADA for generation and transmission systems. Notes on SCADA for the distribution system.

2. State Estimation
Background to the problem of state estimation of the system and suppression of systematic errors of measurement. Operating states of the system and security analysis. Preventive control and corrective control of an electrical system.

3. Stability of the Power System
Behaviour of the power system in transient conditions. Stability of the system to small and large variations. Transient stability studies by the equal area criterion. Notes on transient stability analysis by integration of a multi-machine model of the electrical power system.

4. Automatic Load-frequency Control and Voltage Control
Load-frequency control in electrical power system; primary frequency regulation, secondary (reset) frequency regulation. Definition of the area control error (ACE) and its management in large interconnected systems. Voltage regulation and reactive power. Model of the excitation system of a generator.

5. Industrial Automation
Industrial control systems, programmable logic controllers (PLC); programming languages for the PLC with programming examples. Informatic networks for industrial automation; SCADA systems for industrial environments.
