Specific course objectives

The aim of the course is the definition of an area where it would be possible to investigate some components of the architectural design, of its “culture”, of its technical, formal and fundamental aspects. The complexity and the variety of the required knowledge for the definition of a project, cannot be limited in a unique level, no matter how convincing could be the deepening specialization in one of the many areas - disciplinary and non - involved in the process itself.
It is therefore appropriate emphasize the multiplicity of the approaches, from the more general discipline, to those of the broader field in which the architectural project has to face. At the same time special emphasis on the need to acquire the ability to analyze the path and project outcomes critically will be given. This will be done both with analytical tools with precise references to reality and qualitatively significant achievements.

Course programme

With these assumptions, the course will be divided into two parts:

• theoretical lessons will define the general reference that will be used as starting point and framework for the applicative work that will be conducted by students
• works and exercises during which the students will analyze examples of ancient and modern architecture, chosen from a list proposed by the teacher. The students will have to give a conclusive and concise critical reading. They will choose the communication tools, graphics, physical models, virtual representation, and so on.

Suggested reading materials

During the lessons and the exercises the teacher and the tutors will give bibliographic references for the theoretical and technical aspects. The references will be arguments of discussion and periodic testing.

Testing and exams

In the final exam, the result of the work done by the students during the course and the knowledge of the topics discussed during the lessons will be evaluated.
