2014-15 Academic year

Lecturer: Federico Montecchi

Course name: Electronics II
Course code: 502511
Degree course: Ingegneria Elettronica e Informatica
Disciplinary field of science: ING-INF/01
L'insegnamento è caratterizzante per: Ingegneria Elettronica e Informatica
University credits: ECTS 12

Specific course objectives

The course aims to complete the basic training of the student in relation to the analog electronics and introduce him to life in the laboratory, with use of the equipment and the circuit simulator Spice. At the end of the course the student should have acquired knowledge on architectures with multi-stage transistors with particular reference to the internal structure of operational amplifiers; must know the frequency behavior of the elementary devices and basic circuits; must have mastery of the negative feedback concepts and of stability problems in amplifiers with feedback; must know the systems for the signal conversion from analog to digital and vice versa.

Course programme

  • The feedback: basic concepts, negative and positive feedback. The negative reaction applied to the amplifiers. Calculation of the loop gain. Stability of amplifiers with feedback. Compensation in frequency. Amplification stages with single transistor.
  • Behavior of the transistors at high frequency, the high frequency equivalent circuit for MOS and BJT. Analysis in the high frequency of the basic stages of amplification. The cascode stage. Differential stage BJT and MOS. Multistage amplifiers. Output stages: class A, B, AB. Schemes of BJT and CMOS operational amplifiers.
  • Active filters: biquadratic cells, ladder diagrams topologies. Oscillator circuits, waveform generators, voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO).
  • Interfaces A/D and D/A: sampling and quantization. Sample & Hold circuit. Analog to Digital conversion: single and dual slope, successive approximation type, parallel type (flash).
  • Digital to Analogue Converters: weighted resistance, weighted currents, with ladder network.
  • Noise in electronic circuits. Fundamental aspects of electronic technologies.

Course entry requirements

Knowledge of circuit theory and applied electronics (analog) with particular reference to the MOS and BJT transistors, operational amplifiers, Bode plots. Familiarity with the use of the Fourier transform, the Laplace transform, and the complex numbers.
