Specific course objectives
The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge regarding the motor or sensory disabilities and the design criteria and functional evaluation of prosthetic and assistive technology.
Course programme
Upper limb amputation
Levels of amputation. Classification of upper limb prostheses; components. The myoelectric prosthesis. On-off and proportional control. Sensing of the artificial hand
Lower limb amputation
Levels of amputation. Components: traditional and modular prosthetic implants. The prosthetic foot, knee prosthesis, the socket. Sensing. The rehabilitation process. Evaluation of motor performance: instrumentation for gait analysis.
Neural prostheses
Classification of sensorial prosthesis. The visual system: replacements for micro and macrovisione; natural prosthesis; cortical stimulation, retinal prosthesis.
The auditory system: substitutive prostheses; cochlear implants; auditory brain implants.
Assistive Technology
Communication aids, mobility aids. The use of computers in the sensory and motor disabilities. Home automation. Brain Computer Interface. Assitive robotics.
Course entry requirements
Principles of human physiology. Basic knowledge of biomedical instrumentation
