Elements of Hydraulics

2014-15 Academic year

Lecturer: Sauro Manenti

Course name: Elements of Hydraulics
Course code: 504685
Degree course: Ingegneria Industriale
Disciplinary field of science: ICAR/01
The course relates to:
University credits: ECTS 6
Course website: n.d.

Specific course objectives

The course aims at providing the fundamental theoretical and analytical knowledge for the analysis of:
- the pressure distribution in a liquid at rest and the trust exerted on both plane and curved surfaces;
- the statics of floating bodies;
- the motion of an ideal fluid;
- the stationary pipe flow in laminar and turbulent conditions;
- the power exchange with turbo-machineries.

Course programme

BASIC MECHANICS: units and dimensions of mechanical quantities; state of stress at a point in a material continuum; physical properties: density and viscosity; Newtonian fluids; equation of state.
HYDROSTATICS: Stevin's law; pressure distribution; pressure measurement and manometry; forces on plane and curved surfaces; Archimedes’ principle; buoyancy.
FUNDAMENTALS OF FLUID KINEMATICS: Lagrangian and Eulerian description of motion; flow lines, stream lines; rapidly varied steady flows; uniform and gradually varied stream flows; mean velocity and flow rate.
DYNAMICS OF IDEAL FLUIDS: mass, linear momentum and energy conservation principles; Bernoulli theorem for a stream line and a steady stream flow; the flow from orifices and mouthpieces; flow measurement.
PIPE FLOW: flow regimes; energy loss in laminar and turbulent flows; continous head loss and Moody chart; minor losses in pipe systems (sudden entrance, sudden change of section, bends, valves).
TURBOMACHINERY: centrifugal pumps; pump performance; cavitation; turbines classification;
