Specific course objectives

The course aims primarily to provide elementary knowledge of the main electrical equipment (transformers and rotating machines) employed in industrial applications.

Course programme

Basic features of electrical machines and drives
Characteristics of electromechanical loads and electrical drives and generators; general principles of electromechanical conversion and reversible operation of electric machines. Electrical, macnetic and thermal limits electrical machines and drives.

Power transformers
Operational characteristics. Construction aspects. Principle of operation and equivalent circuits and parameters.

Induction machines and drives
Construction aspects, importance and applications. Operation principles. Equivalent circuit. Definition of the slip and operating conditions as a motor. Mechanical and electromechanical characteristics at constant voltage and frequency. Basics of constant flux operation. Basics of speed regulation. Single-phase induction motor. Speed regulation techniques at rated flux.

Synchronous machines and systems
Construction aspects, importance and applications as alternator and motor. Operation principles. Equivalent circuit and vector diagrams. Active and reactive power control. Torque and power characteristics. Mechanical characteristics of synchronous motors.

DC machines and drives.
Operation principles. Electromechanical and mechanical characteristics and equations of separately excited machines. Speed adjustment at torque and constant power operation.
