Specific course objectives

The course gives the advanced knowledge on multimedia database: iamge, video and audio database. Fundamentals of query by content are given, with several examples of case studies of real application on still image retrieval.

Course programme

The course is about the andances in database management and in non-structured repository search algorithms. The main applications are related to multimedia database, especially for still images and audio.

Data structures
Data structures for describing multimedia objects. The concept of metadata. Examples of metadata on images (histograms).

Compressed databases
Fundamental of compression theory. Entropy. lossless and lossy algorithms. The main image compression algorithms and standards (JPEG, JPEG2000), the wavelet theory

Content based retrieval
Fudnamentals of content based retrieval in image database. Retrieval by colour, texture, shape. Examples of retrieval systems.

data security in databases
Watermarking of multimedia data. Examples in the field of still images

Examples of multimedia databases
Databases for biometry. Performance evaluation (FAR, FRR, ERR).

Course entry requirements

For this course, the knowledge of the theory of relational database is essential.
