Specific course objectives
Students will learn 1) introductory concepts of basic chemistry and cell anatomy to obtain a knowledge of fundamental mechanisms that move the life; 2) inheritance of genes and their structure, mutations and their molecular basis and effects; 3) the modality to predict the risk of inherited mendelian diseases; 4) general organization of the human genome; 5) fundamentals of DNA technology and their application to molecular diagnosis of genetic diseases.
Course programme
Chemical basis and molecular organization of life, protein structure, nucleic acids and their functions, DNA structure and replication, RNA transcription and gene expression, RNA processing, translation, gene expression regulation.
DNA and chromosomes, general organization of the human genome.
Organization and diversity of cells, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, the basics of cell structures, biological membranes and mechanisms of transport, cell cycle, cell cycle control, mitosis and meiosis, meiosis and formation of gametes.
Mendelian pedigrees patterns, multifactorial inheritance, non Mendelian inheritance (mitochondrial inheritance, trisomy rescue, uniparental disomy, imprinted genes, unstable triplets diseases); chromosomes and genes; inheritance X–linked; order of genes on chromosomes; mutations and their consequences; human chromosomes and their anomalies; Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.
Molecular analysis of nucleic acids and examples of application to molecular diagnosis of genetic diseases.
